Hummel contributed to all musical forms except to the symphony. His main oeuvre is for the piano, on which instrument he was one of the great virtuosi of his day. He wrote eight piano concertos, ten piano sonatas, eight piano trios, a piano quartet, a piano quintet, two piano septets, four-hand piano music, a cello sonata, a wind octet, a mandolin sonata, a Trumpet Concerto in E-flat major, operas, Singspiels, masses, and much more.
At the end of his life, Hummel saw the rise of a new school of young composers and virtuosi, and found his own music slowly going out of fashion. His disciplined and clean Clementi-style technique, and his balanced classicism, opposed him to the rising school of tempestuous bravura displayed by the likes of Liszt and Giacomo Meyerbeer. The last of a line of Viennese composers which stretched from Haydn and Mozart through Beethoven and Schubert, Hummel’s death in 1837 marked the end of a musical era.

Johann Nepomuk Hummel
Sonata for Trumpet mvt.3

Eric Ewazen
sonata for trumpet

Eric Ewazen is a prolific composer whose works are becoming standard repertoire for not only trumpet players but also for brass quintets, soloists, and wind ensembles alike. Ewazen wrote the Sonata for Trumpet and Piano for the International Trumpet Guild, and it was premiered by Chris Gekker, trumpet, and Ewazen, piano, in 1995 in Bloomington, Indiana.

This document illuminates some of the characteristics of Ewazen's music, and summarizes the music's technical and performance demands, based on firsthand performing experience. It should also offer practical observations and recommendations for the performance of Eric Ewazen's Sonata for Trumpet and Piano.

Bohuslav Martinu Trumpet Sonatina

Bohuslav Martinu (1890-1959) was a prolific Czech composer, writing many large scale works. The composer moved to Paris in 1923 where he began experimenting in a variety of composition styles. Sonatine for Trumpet and Piano was composed in 1957 and is adaptable to both the B flat and C Trumpet. Martinu himself was a violinist but he liked to experiment and the mid-1950s saw him move to Nice in France, where he began writing Sonatas for wind and brass. Sonatine for Trumpet exemplifies the composer's influence of Stravinsky, Debussy and jazz music. The piece is excitingly virtuosic in its use of flutter tonguing, complex rhythms, chromaticism, and ensemble between the Trumpet andPiano. As a varied, substantial work for the Trumpet repertoire, Martinu 's Sonatine is essential to the advanced trumpeter.
